Eligibility Requirements:

Requires a bachelor degree in medical laboratory related sciences from an accredited university, and current certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP)* or certification as a Specialist in Blood Banking (SBB) by the American Society for Clinical Pathology. Please note that individuals who only have a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) certification are not eligible to apply. Preference is given to candidates who have 300 and 400 level science course work (i.e. Certified Technicians who’s bachelor degree only includes 100 and 200 level sciences course work, yet become MLS (ASCP) certified, should not be considered as fully qualified.)

Students with a GPA no lower than 3.0 and a scheduled degree completion date of no later than 15 May 2021, are encouraged to apply. Students must also be scheduled to take their Medical Laboratory Scientist (ASCP) certification test and successfully pass the exam no later than 1 June 2021.

The ideal candidate will have experience in multiple laboratory sub-disciplines (Clinical Chemistry, Hematology, Urinalysis, Immunology, Blood Banking, and Clinical Microbiology, Molecular Biology). Additionally the candidate will ideally have management experience and be very familiar with the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988 (CLIA) and the management requirements for maintaining compliance with that Code of Federal Regulations, and/or its military equivalent (CLIP). The ideal candidate should also be knowledgeable with regard to College of American Pathologists standards, especially the management standards and requirements. AFSC subspecialties are available for individuals possessing advanced (graduate) degrees in chemistry, microbiology, blood banking, toxicology, hematology, and other clinical research science degrees. Currently, applicants with specialized certifications in blood banking are desired.

43T1 Position Description:

Air Force biomedical laboratory officers ensure laboratory analyses are performed accurately and efficiently. They supervise and perform analysis of biologic and related materials in hospital, clinics, toxicological, or research and development laboratories. They manage daily operations within the laboratory to support healthcare and readiness. Besides being responsible for the accuracy, precision, and validity of all laboratory procedures, they develop new procedures, keep abreast of regulatory requirements, new scientific developments and keep lab equipment up to date. They are responsible for quality and safety programs leading to high reliability with the Air Force Medical Service. During emergency or combat conditions biomedical laboratory officers are responsible for providing a safe and adequate blood supply to temporary and permanent medical facilities.
