Job Responsibilities

As a Medical Laboratory Scientist, you'll play a critical role in collecting, testing, and analyzing specimens to support accurate diagnosis and treatment. This hands-on role spans all areas of the laboratory, offering both variety and professional development.

Key duties include:

• Collect and process blood, body fluid, and tissue specimens
• Perform routine and complex diagnostic tests across multiple lab disciplines: hematology, microbiology, chemistry, immunohematology, urinalysis, and more
• Evaluate and record quality control (QC) results; troubleshoot QC issues when needed
• Maintain and perform preventive maintenance (PM) on laboratory equipment
• Accurately enter and report test results, including critical values, in a timely manner
• Support infection control efforts and assist with DOT-regulated breath alcohol testing
• Participate in laboratory proficiency testing and continuing education programs
• Supervise laboratory operations in the absence of the Lab Manager
• Rotate on-call responsibilities and respond to after-hours lab needs
• Contribute to inventory management, training of new staff, and quality assurance initiatives

Minimum Qualifications

Education & Certification:

• Bachelor’s or Associate's degree (BS/BA) in Medical Laboratory Science or related field
• Certification as ASCP MLS/MT/MLT or equivalent national certification required to obtain Montana license
• Current Montana State Clinical Laboratory Scientist or Technician License (or eligibility to obtain within two months)

Skills & Attributes:

• Proficiency in multiple testing areas including blood bank, microbiology, chemistry, hematology, and serology
• Strong analytical thinking and mechanical aptitude for equipment troubleshooting
• Excellent attention to detail and ability to assess test accuracy independently
• Familiarity with laboratory information systems and willingness to adapt to new technology
• Strong interpersonal skills, including patient communication and professional collaboration
• Maintains patient confidentiality and presents a polished, professional appearance

• Extremely competitive compensation ($35-$42/hr)
