Ultrasound Technician - Regular Full-Time

JOB SUMMARY: Works within the objectives and policies established by the Imaging Department, performs Ultrasound and other related procedures to produce high quality images for continued patient care, which will aid physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of their patients. The Ultrasound Technologist is responsible for daily operations of the songographic department, patient schedule, equipment maintenance, the report of equipment failures, and QA. The sonographer maintains a high standard of medical ethics at all times and is self-motivated to increase their level of understanding and knowledge of the field, disease, and new procedures as they evolve.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Perform clinical assessment and diagnostic sonography examinations
  • Use cognitive sonography skills to identify, record and adapt procedures as appropriate to anatomical, pathological, diagnostic information and images.
  • Use independent judgment during the sonographic exam to accurately differentiate between normal and pathological findings.
  • Analyze sonograms, synthesizes sonography information and medical history, and communicates findings to the appropriate physician.
  • Coordinate work schedule with Imaging Services Manager and/or OP Services clerk to ensure workload coverage.
  • Assume responsibility for the safety, mental and physical comfort of patients while they are in the sonographer’s care.
  • Assist with the daily operations of the Ultrasound Department.
  • Maintain a daily log of patients seen and completes billing processes.
  • Maintain ultrasound equipment and work area, and maintains adequate supplies.
  • Verify type of exam and prepare room for procedure in advance.
  • Confirm patient’s identity and explain procedure to them prior to performing exam.
  • Transport patient to and from ultrasound department.
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of all ultrasound equipment.
  • Comprehend the full function of performing ultrasound examinations utilizing the PACS system.
  • Perform ultrasonic imaging examinations according to Department procedures.
  • Locate and record internal elements of the body, including blood vessels and organs, and identifies any anomalies indicative of disease, injury, or other medically significant conditions.
  • Perform ultrasound evaluations, including screenings, and image interpretation. Assist physician with invasive procedures.
  • Instruct and assist the patient in assuming the physical position for examination.
  • Adjust equipment and calms patient to eliminate test artifacts.
  • Monitor the patient for potentially dangerous physical and emotional changes. Evaluate the test images results for clarity and accuracy; reviews tests with peers.
  • Prepare and distribute preliminary reports to physicians for each exam performed.
  • Responsible for documenting and maintaining the patient’s electronic medical record.
  • Distribute final test results to physicians and service providers.
  • Maintain patient charts, enters interpreted physician diagnosis and billing codes, logs data into patient information systems, and updates file systems for tests performed.
  • Clean and sterilize equipment and work space.
  • Instruct patients in pretest preparation, answer questions and explains procedures.
  • Select a transducer and adjusts the equipment controls according to the organ to be examined, the depth of field and other specifications of test.
  • Perform all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
  • Perform PADNET exams.
  • Execute Holter Monitor process.
  • Perform general Ultrasound exams independently.
  • Perform vascular Ultrasound exams independently.
  • Perform all cardiac ultrasound exams independently.
  • Perform other work-related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • An Associate’s Degree in Diagnostic Ultrasound or related training in a program that allows all candidates to be registry eligible; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience in the diagnostic imaging field.
  • Must be proficient in general ultrasound exams.
  • Must be R.V.T. credentialed.
  • Must be approved by Cardiologist to perform cardiac procedures independently (Compensation when this is gained.)
  • According to the needs of the organization, some incumbents in this job class may be required to obtain additional specific technical certifications.
