Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

The Paramedic will perform certain functions in the Emergency Department within their scope of practice and hospital policy for patients of all age groups (infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric). The Paramedic will document all procedures, observations and/or medication administration performed in the Emergency Department in the patient record. In addition, the Paramedic will maintain communication with other providers and assist the patient care team in providing service to the customer.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Completion of an accredited Paramedic Science Program.
  • Competency in select psychomotor skills as evidenced by completion of orientation and annual competency requirements.
  • Knowledge of hospital policies and nursing standards of care.
  • Knowledge of Emergency Services patient populations (pediatric, adult, geriatric, trauma, medical, surgical conditions, etc.), evidenced by completion of orientation and annual competency requirements.

EXPERIENCE & SPECIAL SKILLS

  • Initiating IV starts and performing blood draws.
  • 12 lead EKG's, defibrillation, pacing, cardioversion.
  • Setting up and operating fluid warmer/Rapid infuser.
  • Initiating introsseous IV's.
  • Operating standard IV pumps.
  • NG/OG tube placement.
  • Performing procedures i.e. Application of splints, casts, dressings, eye irrigation with Morgan lens, wound preps, suture or staple removals, throat & nasopharyngeal cultures, visual acuity.
  • Assisting with procedures including lumbar punctures, suturing, irrigating wounds, electrosurgical cautery. Hare traction, pelvic exams.
  • Monitoring – applying cardiac monitor, pulse Oximetry, temperature, weight, point of care testing (finger stick glucose, urine dip for pregnancy or bacteria).
  • Assisting with resuscitative procedures: performing CPR, assisting with chest tube insertion, thoracentesis, pericardiocentesis, defibrillation and external pacing.
  • Hazardous materials patient decontamination procedures.
  • Must have keyboard skills sufficient for efficient data entry and navigation of the clinical modules of the hospital information system.
  • Skilled in medical terminology.
  • Basic computer operation skills (keyboard and mouse use, Internet browser use, opening and closing programs).
  • Able to process e-mail (read, send, delete, file).
