Optometrist Job Overview:

  • Multiple full-time positions at various clinics in the greater Norfolk region
  • Perform a full range of optometry services.
  • Routine workload is scheduled by the treatment facility through the appointment system Secondary workload is a result of consultation requests submitted to the facility by other staff health care providers.
  • Perform administrative functions such as serving on boards and committees and attending or providing continuing education.
  • Provide optometric care in accordance with the community standard of care and American Optometric Association (AOA) clinical practice guidelines.
  • Performance of all necessary tests and patient work-up to adequately diagnose patients.
  • Performing basic visual acuity tests
  • Measuring and recording distance and near vision, color testing and pinhole vision
  • Lensometry
  • Keratometry
  • Refraction (manual, automated and retinoscopy)
  • Ocular motility tests
  • Binocular coordination testing (vergences, phorias, accommodation)
  • Visual field testing - automated and manual
  • External examination
  • Slit lamp examination
  • Applanation tonometry
  • Funduscopic Examination (Indirect and Direct)
  • Corneal topography
  • Pachymetry

  • Accurately transcribe into the patient medical record, past ocular history, adverse drug reactions, allergies, etc. according to established techniques and procedures.
  • Identify patient's chief complaint and provide a written assessment of findings.
  • Diagnosis and recommendations should be appropriate for the complaint and clinical findings.
  • Appropriate follow-up should be indicated, patient education must be documented, and provider stamp and signature must be present.
  • Provide accurate documentation of specific medication used, dosage, and time given.
  • Provide Dilation on patients
  • Detect neuromuscular impairment or anomalies of binocular function.
  • Provide pre-op and post-op care of corneal refractive surgery patients to include LASIK, PRK and implantable contact lenses (ICL).
  • Prescribe and dispense medications in accordance with privileges and as delineated by the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.

Optometrist Job Qualifications:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) by the American Heart Association (AHA)
  • Computer competency
  • Doctor of Optometry
  • Graduate from a school or college approved by the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education (ACOE) of the American Optometric Association.
  • Licensure: Current, full, active, and unrestricted license.
  • 1 year of full-time experience fitting speciality lenses for keratoconus pithing the past 18 months.
  • Certification to use Therapeutic Pharmaceutical Agents
