Optometrist Position Overview:

  • Examination, diagnosis, treatment, and management of diseases and disorders of the visual system, the eye, and associated structures, as well as diagnosis of related systemic conditions utilizing refractive, pharmaceutical, and rehabilitative (low vision, contact lens, and binocular vision) procedures.
  • Utilization and prescription of pharmaceutical agents for the examination of the eye and adnexa as well as treatment and management of vision disorders, diseases, and conditions of the eye and adnexa.
  • Utilization and prescription of ophthalmic and other rehabilitative prosthetic devices (including spectacles, ballistic protective/gas mask inserts, contact lenses, low vision devices, etc.) and training in their use.
  • Provide pre and post-operative care of corneal refractive surgery patients to include manifest refraction, pre-operative examination/screening, interpretation of pre-operative corneal topography/wave scans and post-operative management
  • Consultations with attending physicians and others, when requested, to augment the care of patients; referral to appropriate health care providers of patients with medical, surgical, psychiatric, and rehabilitative conditions; health education and sight conservation programs to inform patients of potential ocular complications of disease processes and to prevent loss of sight or reduced visual performance as a result of safety hazards or environmental influences; emergency care not within scope of other approved privileges to prevent imminent vision loss
  • Performs clinical procedures to include refractive status determination; binocular vision status determination; ocular and adnexal health evaluation; external, anterior segment, and fundus photography with interpretation; ocular electro diagnostic measurement with interpretation; ocular diagnostic imaging (ultra sonographic and laser) measurement with interpretation; ocular angiographic (fluorescein and indocyanine green) photography with interpretation; epilation of lashes; expression of adnexal glands; examination, testing, insertion of temporary and permanent punctual plugs; removal of nonperforating foreign bodies from the eye and adnexa; corneal debridement; corneal scraping for culturing.
  • Consultations with Flight Medicine physicians to augment care of aircrew and special duty personnel. Performs, documents and interprets specialized vision tests
  • Assist Optometry and Ophthalmology Clinics with providing care for acute walk-in patients as time permits to ensure timely care of all patients without adversely impacting refractive surgery clinic flow.

Optometrist position requirements:

  • Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) from a school or college of optometry accredited by the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education (ACOE) and approved by the Air Force Surgeon General in the year of the applicant's graduation.
  • BLS
  • Clinical competency requirements
  • Permanent, full, and unrestricted therapeutic pharmaceutical agents (TPA) license to practice optometry in a U.S. jurisdiction
  • Applicants must have 2 years of general TPA practice of optometry or one year of ACOE accredited post-graduate residency training in an appropriate specialty area.
