Optometrist - Research Job Overview:

  • Examination, diagnosis, treatment, and management of diseases and disorders of the visual system, the eye, and associated structures, as well as diagnosis of related systemic conditions utilizing refractive, pharmaceutical, and rehabilitative (low vision, contact lens, and binocular vision) procedures.
  • Utilization and prescription of pharmaceutical agents for the examination of the eye and adnexa as well as treatment and management of vision disorders, diseases, and conditions of the eye and adnexa.
  • Utilization and prescription of ophthalmic and other rehabilitative prosthetic devices (including spectacles, ballistic protective/gas mask inserts, contact lenses, low vision devices, etc.) and training in their use.
  • Provide pre and post-operative care of corneal refractive surgery patients and other refractive surgical patients as technology and procedures evolve and are approved.
  • Ordering of diagnostic laboratory studies (including preparation of specimens for cultures, sensitivity testing, smear and histological analysis, chemistry, hematology, coagulation, serology/ immunology, nuclear medicine, urinalysis, etc.); ordering of diagnostic imaging studies (ultrasound of the eye, head, neck, heart; ocular fluorescein and indocynanine green angiography; radiology of the eye, orbit, head, neck, chest including X-ray, CT, MRI, MRA with and without contrast; etc.)
  • Performs clinical procedures to include but are not limited to refractive status determination; binocular vision status determination; ocular and adnexal health evaluation; external, anterior segment, topographic evaluation with interpretation, and fundus photography with interpretation; ocular electrodiagnostic measurement with interpretation; ocular diagnostic imaging (ultrasonographic and laser) measurement with interpretation; ocular angiographic (fluorescein and indocyanine green) photography with interpretation; epilation of lashes; expression of adnexal glands; examination, testing, dilation and irrigation of the lacrimal apparatus; insertion of temporary and permanent punctual plugs; interpretation of optical coherence tomography (OCT) and Humphrey Visual Field (HVF), removal of non-perforating foreign bodies from the eye and adnexa; uncomplicated repair of non-perforating ocular and adnexal lacerations; suture removal from the eye or adnexae; corneal debridement and intrastromal repair of recurrent epithelial erosions; corneal scraping for culturing.
  • Consultations with attending physicians and others, when requested, to augment the care of patients.
  • Provide pre and post-operative care of corneal refractive surgery patients to include interpretation of pupils, motility, anterior and posterior segment health, examination of the nerve and peripheral retina, interpretation of topography, orbscan, wavescan, and HVF and OCT as needed.
  • Utilization and interpretation of devices that support refractive surgery, to include, but not limited to the following: topographer, pentacam, wavescan, orbscan, visual field and OCT and any other devices which may be approved in the future and may be routinely utilized and interpreted in refractive surgery patients.
  • Provide pre-operative/post-operative refractive surgery counseling and be versed in preventative medicine guidelines pertaining to topics specific to refractive surgery such as, but not limited to: corneal haze, infections, diffuse lamellar keratitis and basic eye care.
  • Provide emergent care within scope of approved privileges to prevent imminent vision loss or adverse visual outcomes. Provide acute care for post-refractive surgery walk-in patients. This scope may be broadened to encompass care for other active duty, retiree beneficiaries, or dependents as time permits
  • Obtain knowledge of the internal organization of patient records in order to search the records to extract medical information and data relevant to patient care.
  • Manage database resources for the tracking of pre-operative, post-operative, and intraoperative data for refractive surgery and/or develop nomograms, vector analysis, and data analysis for all refractive outcomes as determined necessary.
  • Perform a primary role in refractive surgery clinic whose mission enhances the visual readiness and optimization of active duty personnel for both war and peace mission accomplishment.
  • Participate in the installation's occupational vision program involving functions performed by the optometry clinic.
  • Perform a primary role in the visual readiness and optimization of active duty personnel for both war and peace mission accomplishment. Military experience preferred.
  • Participate in squadron process improvement activities, evaluation of squadron performance, and optometric-related research. Process improvement activities will include, but not limited to peer reviews. Provide training to ophthalmic technicians, other optometrists, and other wing staff as appropriate. This will require public speaking as well as written products.

Optometrist - Research Job Qualifications:

  • BLS by AHA
  • Computer competency (Microsoft applications, computer operations, databases, et al)
  • Doctor of Optometry
  • Graduate from a school or college approved by the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education (ACOE) of the American Optometric Association.
  • TPA Licensure: Current, full, active, and unrestricted license.
  • At least five years of experience of pre and post-operative care
  • Five years of general TPA practice of optometry or one year of Accreditation Council on Optometric Education (ACOE) accredited post-graduate residency training in an appropriate specialty area, within the past eight years.
