Optometrist - Refractive Eye Surgery Job Overview:

  • Participate in squadron process improvement activities, evaluation of squadron performance, and optometric-related research and provide training to ophthalmic technicians, other optometrists, and or other wing staff as appropriate.
  • Process Improvement activities will include, but not limited to peer reviews.
  • Utilization and prescription of pharmaceutical agents for the examination of the eye and adnexa as well as treatment and management of vision disorders, diseases, and rehabilitative (low vision, contact lens, and binocular vision) procedures.
  • Provide pre and post- operative care of corneal refractive surgery patients.
  • Ordering of diagnostic laboratory studies (including preparation of specimens for cultures, sensitivity testing, smear and histological analysis, chemistry, hematology, coagulation, serology/immunology, nuclear medicine, urinalysis, etc.) ordering of diagnostic imaging studies (ultrasound of the eye, head, neck, heart, ocular fluorescein and indocynanine green angiography; radiology of the eye, orbit, head, neck, chest including x-ray, CT, MRI, MRA with and without contrast, etc.)
  • Consultations with attending physicians and others, when requested, to augment the care of patients; referral to appropriate health care providers of patients with medical, surgical, psychiatric, and rehabilitative conditions, health education and sight conservation programs to inform patients of potential ocular complications of disease processes and to prevent loss of sight or reduced visual performance as a result of safety hazards or environmental influences; emergency care not within scope of other approved privileges to prevent imminent vision loss.
  • Performs clinical procedures to include refractive status determination, binocular vision status determination, ocular adnexal health evaluation, external, anterior segment, and fundus photography with interpretation, ocular electrodiagnostic measurement with interpretation; ocular diagnostic imaging (ultrasonographic and laser) measurement with interpretation, ocular angiographic fluorescein and indocyanine green) photography with interpretation, epilation of lashes; expression of adnexal glands; examination, testing, dilation and irrigation of the lacrimal apparatus; insertion of temporary and permanent punctual plugs removal of non-perforating foreign bodies from the eye and adnexa; uncomplicated repair of non-perforating ocular and adnexal lacerations; suture removal from the eye or adnexa; corneal debridement and intrastromal repair of recurrent epithelial erosions; corneal scraping for culturing.
  • Preform informational briefings for refractive surgery patients.
  • Performs various administrative task as requested by the surgeons.

Optometrist - Refractive Eye Surgery Job Qualifications:

  • Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) Optometrist, Refractive Eye Surgery
  • Graduate from a school or college approved by the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education (ACOE) of the American Optometric Association.
  • 1 year of experience in Refractive Eye Surgery
  • Board Certification: Optometrist, Refractive Eye Surgery
  • DEA
  • Licensure: Current, full, active, and unrestricted.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Computer competency (Microsoft applications, computer operations, databases, et al)
