Ophthalmic Technician Job Overview:

  • Performs other tests and measurements as directed by the physician.
  • Administer vision therapy programs prescribed by the optometrist/ophthalmologist.
  • Perform pre-op, surgical and post-op care of refractive surgery patients to include auto-refraction and auto keratometry, interpreting refraction with both automated and manual phoropters, basic ocular motility tests, pupil exam, ophthalmic photograph, flourescein angiography, glare testing, wavefront testing, analysis, goldmann tonometry, pupilometry, excimer and femtosecond reractive lasers and assisting the surgeon during refractive surgery.
  • Responsible for preparation of the corneal refractive surgery suite and calibration of the excimer and femtosecond lasers. Verify the proper working order of all refractive lasers and assist the surgeon in the corneal refractive surgery procedures (Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK) and LaserAssisted In situ Keratomileusis (LASIK).
  • Prepare refractive surgery procedures charts with patient information and test results.
  • Perform data entry into AHLTA, CHCS and various outcome database software programs.
  • Perform automated and subjective refractions using the Marco Epic system or manual phoroptor.
  • Direct the flow of patients.
  • Operate the following equipment used in the Ophthalmology Department; (1) Intralase Femtosecond, (2) Allegretto Excimer Laser, and (3) the VISX StarS4 Excimer Laser.

Ophthalmic Technician position requirements:

  • BLS
  • Two (2) years of experience within the past three years assisting with corneal refractive surgeries including PRK and LASIK procedures, patient selection, and care of corneal refractive surgery patients.

  • Possess a basic knowledge of ophthalmic screening techniques with knowledge of ophthalmic pathology, pharmacology, optics, photography and surgical techniques.

  • Certification for operation of the excimer lasers used in the Corneal Refractive Surgery Program.
