WORK SCHEDULE:

Full-time. May be required to work daytime, evening or/and weekend shifts and may be required to work extended hours to successfully complete assignment or project.

SUMMARY:

Perform professional application of medical technology principles, concepts, and methodology in such specialties as chemistry, urinalysis, blood bank, hematology, serology, toxicology, therapeutic drug monitoring, point of care testing and microbiology using automated analyzers and complex manual techniques.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform manual and automated procedures on patient samples such as serum, blood, urine, semen, tissue, aspirates, swabs, body fluids, and stool.
  • Perform manual and automated procedures in Immunohematology, Microbiology, Immunology, Hematology, Coagulation, Urinalysis, Chemistry, Shipping and Receiving, Venipuncture, Specimen Processing and collection.
  • Properly and efficiently collect patient’s specimens to ensure stability and integrity of the sample for testing.
  • Manage and prioritize laboratory work based on immediate (STAT), as soon as possible (ASAP), or routine priority.
  • Apply professional knowledge of medical technology principles, concepts, and methodology and works in accordance with the College of American Pathologists (CAP) standards, department standard operating procedures (SOPs), the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) instrument manuals, manufacturer’s instructions and technical references related to testing.
  • Maintain competencies in areas of work in accordance with the College of American Pathologist (CAP) standards, laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Confirm test results and develop data that may be used by physicians in determining the presence and extent of disease or in support of medical research.
  • Modifying or design laboratory procedures; establish and monitor quality control systems and measures; and provide instruction in the basic theory, technical skills, and application of laboratory test procedures.
  • Prepare appropriate standards, reagents, and quality control materials required for the performance of test procedures.
  • Conduct quality control/quality assurance reviews on work performed, existing and/or new equipment and reagents, procedures, and manuals within the assigned section of the laboratory and maintain documentation of his/her review in accordance with (IAW) the guidelines established by accrediting/inspecting agencies and/or department policies.
  • Review internal and external quality control programs and works with the supervisor or clinical laboratory chief to resolve discrepancies.
  • Evaluate validity of data in relation to test systems and assay procedures.
  • Integrate and correlate test data with other laboratory and patient data to lead to a conclusion about the normality of a system.
  • Create, use, or modify logic schema to determine corrective actions for problems.
  • Perform preventive maintenance for all instruments.
  • Recognize, locate, and implement corrective action to solve technical or clerical problems.
  • Calibrate or standardize equipment, troubleshoots malfunctions, and make repairs or identifies need for external services (e.g. consults SOP or operator’s manual, contacts manufacturer customer service hotline, contacts biomedical maintenance, etc.).
  • Ensure that reagents, controls, calibrators, etc. are labeled in accordance with laboratory policies.
  • Record temperatures of refrigerators, freezers, water baths, etc.
  • Initiate maintenance requests when required. Perform required maintenance or user level tasks (e.g. load paper or labels) in hospital information system and instrument systems and printers.
  • Analyze blood samples/units for use in transfusions by identifying the number of cells, the cell morphology or the blood group, blood type, and compatibility with other blood types.
  • Operate sophisticated laboratory equipment in the form of high and moderate complexity analyzers, waive testing, microscopes, pipettes, centrifuges and cell counters, etc.
  • Navigate Laboratory Information System (LIS) in order to input, amend, file and certify patient results and enter results into a patient’s medical record.
  • Assist in laboratory LIS database management and validations, file and table, and office automation. Reviews and updates LIS test files as required to ensure accuracy of lab test reporting and specimen collection.
  • Monitor overall workflow pattern within section during shift; advise supervisor or clinical laboratory chief of problem areas.
  • Ensure that hospital and department policies/procedures, to include safety practices, are effectively followed.
  • Work in close cooperation with the supervisor, clinical laboratory chief and Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge (NCOIC) and keeps them advised of any problems or changes within the service (personnel, equipment, supplies, and workflow patterns) that may affect the overall operation of the laboratory.
  • Compile data for administrative reports; and report any new or unusual trends to the supervisor, quality improvement coordinator, or clinical laboratory chief.
  • Assist in Quality Assurance management: inspection of Quality Control (QC) records, proficiency tests, pending list, master log, training, incident and patient safety reports; maintain accreditation for laboratory testing performed.
  • Maintain quality assurance data, conducts trending analyses, identify critical episodes or events and reports such to the appropriate authority along with recommended actions.
  • Coordinate implementation of approved solutions to quality assurance and risk management problems with all affected parties within the department of pathology and/or other departments or services within the medical center. Provide data, information and analytically based recommendations on a monthly basis to sectional management for use in fulfilling quality assurance monitoring responsibilities.
  • Manage expendable and non-expendable resources effectively.
  • Conduct patient care in a manner customary with the career field. Discuss results and findings of laboratory tests and procedures with physicians clearly.
  • Coordinate with supervisor in planning work flow and duty schedules for assigned section(s). Anticipate problems with tests to be performed and discuss possible solutions with the technicians.
  • Maintain status and progress of work, making day-to-day adjustments in work requirements in accordance with established priorities. Obtain assistance from the supervisor on irresolvable issues as necessary.
  • Maintain records of work accomplished and time expended and prepare/review reports as required.
  • Consult with other medical staff members to determine their requirements for effective patient care—elevate staff’s feedback to supervisor.
  • Perform collection/analysis/review of clinical laboratory testing in accordance with established operating instructions, ensuring reporting of accurate results within established turnaround time.
  • Provide consultative support to medical staff concerning test selection, timing, specimen quality, and interpretation of results. Ensure accuracy information during annual Lab Guide review.
  • Participate in research, evaluation, validation, and implementation of new instrumentation or methodology applicable to the clinical laboratory. Perform instrument calibration and method validations required.
  • Adhere to infection control procedures to include the use of personal protective equipment requirements (PPE) and the disposal of biological hazardous waste.
  • Participate in required in-service training and continuing medical education as well as performance improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain all required patient safety and hospital training requirements.
  • Ensure safe work environment, good laboratory practices and safe employee work habits.
  • Assist with training laboratory staff and training programs. Train new staff technologists/technicians and students in procedures, instrumentation, and workload organization. Communicate and demonstrate proper techniques for completion of various laboratory procedures and practices.
  • Utilize department/section training plan for the area to be covered. Evaluate and documents staff or student's ability to complete testing procedures in an accurate and timely manner while maintaining the workflow of assigned area.
  • Advise supervisor, laboratory chief or quality assurance coordinator of continuing education needs of employees. Plans and presents in-service educational programs for laboratory or hospital personnel, or other interested groups. Assignments may include making structured lesson plans to present information on new procedures, methodology, or interpretations to clinical staff.
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance.
  • Other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Position consists of standing for long periods of time, using hands/fingers, handling, reaching with hands and arms, speaking or translating. Periods of walking, standing, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, and lifting boxes weighing up to 50 pounds. Moderate to extended periods of office work with heavy periods of computer usage. May be assigned occasional to moderate periods of analytical tasks requiring extensive reasoning abilities. Job Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, or BS/BA degree in a related scientific field with an internship in Medical Technology, or a minimum of 12 month’s work experience in an accredited laboratory.
  • Certification as a Medical Technologist (or equivalent) by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists or American Medical Technologist (AMT).
  • Must have and maintain current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Red Cross. This certificate must be current at all times.
  • Must obtain and maintain the site's required health screening and immunization requirements.
  • Must obtain and maintain any necessary security access and/or background checks.
  • Must obtain and maintain all required documents, certifications, licenses, etc. listed on the credentialling checklist, sent by Katmai’s Credentialing Specialist, for this position for initial hire.

SPECIAL SKILLS:

  • Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with a diverse group of people.
  • Must be able to read, understand, speak, write English fluently.
  • Assembles medical equipment and prepares area to ensure proper equipment operation.
  • Excellent written communication skills to perform accurate documentation.

CSS Compensation and Benefits package:

  • Pay Range: $30-$35 per hour based on experience
  • SCA Health and Welfare: $4.22/hr paid toward employee only medical insurance. Any remainder paid in cash on bi-weekly paycheck.
