(Archived) Director of Health Information Management / Medical Records

Job Description

Small acute care hospital in western Colorado is currently seeking full-time, permanent RHIA or RHIT Director for their Health Information Management department. The Director is responsible for organizing, directing and supervising all functions concerned with collection, inspection, processing and filing of medical records. Director will assist the members of the professional staff by keeping them informed regarding established requirements for records and reports and by taking care of clerical and administrative details.

Position Requirements:

  • Organizes and supervise all functions of the Medical Records Department
  • Assures there is adequate coverage for department responsibilities through appropriate scheduling
  • Orients and instructs personnel, schedules hours, assigns duties, supervises personnel and evaluates work performance
  • Supervises/performs collection of, inspection of, completion/signature of, coding of, indexing of, filing of, retrieval of, abstracting of medical records as necessary
  • Assembles data collected from all departments and completes monthly statistical report
  • Supervises/performs transcription as dictated by physician
  • Supervises/performs coding of diagnoses and procedures, along with entry of said information into the computer for data retrieval
  • Supervises/performs filing of records according to established system; retrieval of records when requested by medical staff or other authorized persons; refilling of records when returned
  • Supervises/performs process for releasing medical records and makes sure facility is complying with federal and state laws concerning release of information
  • Supervises correspondence, telephone inquiries, requisitions, supplies and equipment
  • Prepares departmental budget
  • Prepares records for court

Qualifications:
  • Graduate of an approved course for Medical Record Administrators or Technicians with subsequent registration or accreditation by the American Health Information Management Association preferred
  • R.H.I.T or R.H.I.A accreditation required with a minimum of five (5) years of experience in medical record field
  • Must have strong supervisory or management experience
  • Thorough knowledge of Federal and state laws and DNV standards as pertains to maintenance of medical records in an acute care facility.
