Job Description

Full-time Ophthalmic Technician needed at a top facility right outside of Boston!
(Reference Code: KAM)

Day shift 8am-4:30pm

Under general supervision of the Technician manager/Community practice supervisor, this position follows established professional standards and procedures, helps facilitate patient flow and performs a variety of screening and technical diagnostic tests including manual lensometry and manual keratometry. Assists with patient contact lens removal/ insertion and instilling eye drops as directed by physician.

Responsibilities:
- Prepares patient for the physician’s evaluation by obtaining history, chief complaint, document medications and pertinent questions and necessary information.
- Performs various screening tasks including visual acuity, PAM, BAT, auto and manual lensometry, auto and manual refraction, auto keratometry, Ishihara plates, Amsler grid, stereo test, muscle balance, D-15 color test, and Contrast Sensitivity test.
- Performs various diagnostic tests as determined necessary through patient assessment; pupil and anterior chamber depth evaluation, applanation tonometry, including Goldmann and Tono pen, confrontation and Humphrey visual fields, and corneal topography.
- Assists patient with contact lens removal and reinsertion.
- Instills diagnostic eye drops as directed by the physician to evaluate level of pressure in the eye and to dilate pupils.
- Prepares patient consent forms and assists physician in laser treatment and surgical procedures as needed.
- Performs instrument maintenance (i.e. bulb replacement, battery changes, calibration, etc.) and ensures that all equipment and lights are working properly.
- Has knowledge of ocular pharmacology, including identification and proper use and installation of diagnostic medications.
- Set up exam rooms by ensuring that they are clean, organized, stocked with necessary medications, supplies, instruments, forms, and patient education materials.
- Cleans and sterilizes surgical instruments and keep its logs up to date.
- Maintain refrigerator logs up to date.
- Complies with all local, state and federal regulations and laws governing the performance of this position within the Ophthalmology department.

Requirements:
* High school diploma or equivalent required. Bachelor’s degree in related field preferred.
* Completion of ophthalmic, optometric, or medical assistant training program and/or AAO Home Study Course preferred.
* Certification as a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant in good standing or at least one year in an ophthalmic practice preferred.
* Current CPR certification preferred.
* Experience in an ophthalmic or healthcare related setting.
* Experience with computers and scheduling systems preferred.
* Knowledge of eye terminology, basic anatomy and physiology of eye preferred.
* Knowledge of or aptitude for biological sciences preferred.
* Excellent interpersonal skills necessary to work effectively with patients and understand their needs, and be responsive to elderly and sensory handicapped.
* Also requires the ability to work closely and effectively with physicians and other clinical staff, including residents, fellows, attending physicians, and nurses.
* Excellent communication skills required effectively explaining the exam process to patients and allaying their concerns and apprehensions.
* Strong attention to detail.
* Ability to work in fast-paced, high volume clinics.
* Energetic, self-motivated, and ability to function independently.
* Interest in developing clinical knowledge and furthering career.
