Medical Laboratory Technician Job Overview:

  • Perform a full range of lab duties at a 24/7 facility.
  • Variable shifts to cover the operations of a 24/7 facility.
  • Calculate test results and measure prescribed quantities of samples during tests.
  • Notice pertinent details of specimens under microscopic study.
  • Perform a wide variety of laboratory tests either manually or using automated instrumentation.
  • Evaluate information against measurable criteria in the performance of laboratory tests.
  • Perform precise and accurate laboratory testing according to established laboratory procedures.
  • Receive written requisitions from health care providers for routine and special laboratory tests.
  • Set up and adjust laboratory equipment and apparatus.
  • Obtain laboratory specimens directly from patients by venipuncture.
  • Add reagents or indicator solutions, and subject specimens to various laboratory operations according to established procedures.
  • Prepare slides for microscopic analysis as necessary.
  • Observe test reactions, changes of color, or formation of precipitates; studies or subjects treated specimens to automatic analyzing equipment to make qualitative and quantitative analysis.
  • Record test results to flat logs and request slips and file reports in the CHCS/AHLTA
  • Conduct patient in-processing prior to specimen collection, including review of paperwork accompanying patients and cordial guidance and assistance, as well as ensuring proper specimen identification and labeling.
  • Seek clarification of duties when indicated. Seek and obtain knowledge regarding specialized tests.
  • Interact with other employees and supervisor to provide efficient specimen processing service to patients.
  • Perform proper venipuncture, finger-stick and heel-stick procedures using appropriate techniques.
  • Performs routine and specialized test procedures using manual and/or instrumental techniques in accordance with established protocols. Prepares, processes and/or performs testing on specimens for analysis, ensuring that the physiological properties of the sample are maintained. Determines suitability of specimens for analysis, requesting new specimens if determined to be unusable. Prepares, processes and/or performs testing on standards, proficiency specimens, controls, solutions, and reagents.
  • Support a comprehensive Quality Control program on all procedures and reagents, ensuring technical and scientific accuracy of tests and procedures performed. Performs initial review of quality control data so as to recognize departures from expected results and identifies shifts, trends, and/or bias in testing procedures.
  • Performs primary review of patient results. Identifies unusual and/or discrepant values and initiates appropriate follow-up procedures to correct problems. Correlates data with other laboratory findings and/or patient history to verify results

Medical Laboratory Technician Qualifications:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Associate Degree or higher in a Laboratory Science, or Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited institution.

  • 1 year of full-time experience within the preceding (2) two years as a Medical Laboratory Technician

  • Certification/registration as determined by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or AMT

Position contingent on contract award with an anticipated Fall start date and award notice.
