Allergy Technician Job Overview:

  • Perform a variety of duties associated with the delivery of patient care in the Allergy/Immunology and Adult Immunizations Clinics. Duties will primarily be clinical in nature, although clerical work will be required on occasion to aid personnel dedicated to clerical tasks.
  • Check in patients and check and update their demographic and insurance information, complete the Standard Form (SF) 600, obtain medication history, procure current laboratory data and reports placing them in the medical record, perform pulmonary function tests, obtain and document vital signs.
  • Observe patients in the clinic and those waiting in the patient waiting room, reporting any abnormalities in vital signs, symptoms, and general physical and emotional conditions to the clinic nurse or medical provider.
  • Administer allergy skin testing and challenges according to the guidelines set forth in the clinic and hospital policy.
  • Administer allergy immunotherapy injections and adult immunizations according to guidelines set forth in the clinic and hospital policy.
  • Prepare immunization and allergy solutions for testing purposes and patient administration.
  • Render emergency assistance to patients by performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), initiating intravenous (IV) therapy, maintaining the patient's airway and administering medications as directed by the Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) provider.
  • Assist providers in patient examinations. Prepare and position patients and act as stand by for medical providers when necessary.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and act as a patient advocate while delivering care that is sensitive to patient diversity.
  • Reiterate and reinforce instruction for the patient and/or family member that were previously projected by the provider. Instructions may cover self-care, environmental control methods, use of nebulizers and/or metered dose inhalers, etc.
  • Assist with the notification of patients with abnormal laboratory results; obtain appropriate information to ensure prompt and correct treatment.
  • Assist with the orientation and teaching of personnel in clinical and administrative activities of the clinic.
  • Identify deficiencies in supply levels, medication levels, equipment, safety hazards, and environmental hazards and ensure attention is brought to appropriate persons or corrects the deficiency directly.
  • Call new patients referred to the clinic to schedule their appointments.

Allergy Technician Qualifications:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Medication/Immunization Administration, Intravenous and Venipuncture Certification
  • High School Degree
  • Graduate from a medical assistant training program accredited by Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) of the American Medical Technologists or a formal medical services training program of the United States Armed Forces.
  • Certification: Successful completion of a didactic specialty course in Allergy & Immunology or possess three (3) years of Allergy/Immunology and Immunization experience within the last four (4) years in a specialty clinic.
