Sterile Technician Job Overview:

  • Processing and decontamination involve all the actions required prior to sterilizing and issuance.
  • Assemble, package, wrap, and sterilize the medical supply items, and distribute supply items used for patient care in hospital wards and clinics.
  • Knowledge of aseptic principles and techniques including, cleaning techniques, sterilization mediums, tests to determine effectiveness of sterilization, and packaging, storage, and shelf-life characteristics.
  • Become familiar with hospital/clinic layout, staffing, and operations and the integration of the sterile supply operation into the total health care program to adequately supply the hospital wing.
  • Have an awareness of the relative cost of the various items used in the wing to take necessary precautions with costly equipment.
  • Have a basic understanding of medical and surgical terminology, therapeutic procedures, and of human anatomy and physiology to understand supply requirements and to explain the availability of resources to medical personnel.

Sterile TechnicianJob Qualifications:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) by American Heart Association or American Red Cross equivalent of CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer
  • US Citizenship
  • High School Diploma or GED Certificate
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR
  • At least two continuous years' experience within the last four years as Central Sterile Supply Technician.
  • Current certification by the International Association of Healthcare Central Services Materials Management or current certification by the National Institute of Health Care Sterile Processing and Distribution Personnel.

  • Possess professional knowledge of a wide range and variety of diseases and types of injuries pertaining to the brain, central nervous system, spinal cord, peripheral nervous systems. Supplementary skills to recognize emergency conditions that required immediate referral or involvement of qualified medical personnel and perform designated treatment.
  • Working knowledge of military culture, customs, and procedures including military profiles and retention of Active Duty personnel.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with health providers at all levels and to provide professional assistance to health care finders in making referrals to appropriate health care providers.
  • Knowledge of standard prescription medications and their applications in order to properly prescribe medications for common illnesses.
  • Ability to collect and record medical histories and conduct general physical examinations.
  • Ability to communicate both orally and in writing in a clear, concise, and well organized manner.
  • Working knowledge of CPT/ICD-9/10 codes. Must have experience in word processing and be computer literate.
