Ophthalmology Research Technician - Lead Job Overview:

  • Perform outpatient ophthalmology technician health care services.
  • Assist ophthalmologist in surgery, perform ophthalmic clinical photography and fluorescence angiography, and electrophysiological and microbiological procedures.
  • Perform ophthalmology clinic activities.
  • Assistant to the refractive surgery manager.
  • Performs the roles and responsibilities of the refractive surgery manager when the refractive surgery manager is not available.
  • Manages and maintains content for the website.
  • Updates and contributes to the hospital's social media presence.
  • Maintains and makes updates as necessary for standard clinic forms.
  • Secondary point of contact for the refractive surgery center's organizational email box for surgery applicants.
  • Create and execute training programs for new employees or continuous refresher training.
  • Manage medical profiles program for U.S. and U.S. friendly forces.
  • Maintain and make updates as necessary for patient education materials.
  • Prepares patients and performs as special surgical assistant in all types of ophthalmic surgery particularly refractive laser surgery.
  • Administers ophthalmic drops and ointments, applies ocular dressings, performs suture removal, and obtains eye cultures.
  • Performs general ophthalmic procedures in preparing preoperative and postoperative patients.
  • Takes ophthalmic photographs.
  • Prepares injectable ophthalmic anesthetics and antibiotics.
  • Assist surgeons in performing surgical and laser procedures in the clinic and operating room as required.
  • Assist provider in the examination and treatment of ophthalmology patients.
  • Conducts vision screening tests
  • Assist the ophthalmologist with clinical procedures and performs as special assistant, using procedures pertaining to all types ophthalmologic surgeries.
  • Prepare patients for and performs general preparation of pre-operative patients. Provide post-operative instructions as directed by the physician.
  • Assist provider in contact lens cleaning, dispensing, insertion/removal, and patient instruction. Prepare and fit patients with special optometric devices as instructed by the provider. Instruct patients in correct care, hygiene post-procedurally.
  • Order and maintain ophthalmologic medications, supplies and equipment for use by the physician.

Ophthalmology Research Technician - Lead Job Qualifications:

  • CPR card
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • 4 years previous experience working as a COA in an Ophthalmology Clinic that performs refractive surgery or Refractive Surgery Clinic performing functions stated. Waivers possible.

  • Certification: on all refractive surgery laser platforms utilized within three to six months of obtaining new equipment or on current equipment three to six months from date of hire.

  • Knowledge of ocular anatomy; ophthalmic medications; visual physiology, optics; use and maintenance of ophthalmic instruments and testing equipment; ophthalmic and medical regulations; medical terminology; optometric technology; asepsis; ocular referrals and emergency medical treatment; patient transportation; medical ethics; medical administration; surgical instruments and equipment; ophthalmic injectable medications; anesthetic solutions; and, ocular disorders.
