Assistant Lab Manager in Hawaii
Location: Kauai, HI
SCHEDULE
- Regular Full-Time Position
Must be available Sunday through Saturday 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, including holidays. Must be able to work other shifts as needed.
Must be flexible with schedule changes to meet operational needs.
HIRING RANGE
- $87,000.00 to $113,752 annually
Actual pay commensurate with experience
JOB SUMMARY
Assists Laboratory Manager with directing supervisory staff and the overall operations of the department in support of the company and department mission, vision, shared values, and strategic goals. Assumes responsibility and authority in the Manager's absence. Provides leadership by planning, organizing, and directing operational activities to ensure service levels meet client and patient needs.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assists Manager in supporting employees and management by leading and participating in company and department projects, setting priorities, assigning responsibilities, and establishing objectives. (30%)
- Supports department management team by directing Seniors, Supervisors, and Coordinators.
- Manages employees, including performance reviews, training, development, and corrective actions.
- Communicates effectively with other departments, vendors, clients, and patients.
- Develops, promotes, and maintains a positive work environment.
- Assists Manager in directing the department to ensure operations comply with all policies and procedures according to regulatory requirements. (20%)
- Directs overall department operations.
- Ensures all policies are communicated, trained on, and performed accurately.
- Ensures staff competence is maintained through training and competency assessments.
- Maintains facilities in compliance with regulations.
- Proactively investigates and implements improvements to current systems and operations to increase efficiency and effectiveness. (20%)
- Coordinates with other departments to maximize quality and efficiency.
- Evaluates and recommends improvements to meet business objectives.
- Participates in financial performance reviews and provides recommendations.
- Ensures professional skills and operational knowledge are cutting-edge with innovative systems, processes, and technology. (20%)
- Ensures continuing education and development for management team.
- Participates in technical, management, and IT continuing education.
- Participates in appropriate professional societies.
- Applies knowledge as a teaching tool and fosters relationships with customers and healthcare partners. (10%)
- Collaborates with other hospital laboratory teams on process improvement initiatives.
- Participates in meetings and conferences with laboratory partners.
- Participates in hospital inspection readiness.
- Performs other duties as required.

Typical Physical Demands:
- Requires fine manipulation and simple grasping.

- Requires standing, sitting, typing/keying for extended periods.
- Requires walking, bending, or climbing stairs intermittently.
- Requires lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling supplies weighing up to thirty-five pounds occasionally.
- Requires wearing protective equipment (PPE) and occasional air or ground travel.
Typical Working Conditions:
- Work environment includes conditions common to a hospital/laboratory setting.
- Generally works in an indoor, air-conditioned area.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
- Bachelor's degree in a chemical, biological, clinical, or medical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution.
Required:
- At least five (5) years of experience as Medical Technologist, Medical Laboratory Technician or Clinical Laboratory Scientist.
- One (1) year of training and/or experience in high complexity testing in the designated specialty(ies) and subspecialty(ies) of service for which the person is responsible.
- At least two (2) years management experience.
Preferred:
- Experience working in or managing pre-analytical functions.
Certification:
- Certified as a Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) by an agency recognized by the Hawaii Department of Health State Laboratories Division.
Licensure:
- Hawaii State License as a Technologist or Technician.
