Medical Laboratory Scientist II (MLS II) – Blood Bank Specialist
Full-Time Days | Greater Burlington, VT Area
A highly respected community hospital is seeking an experienced Medical Laboratory Scientist II to serve as a Blood Bank Section Specialist within a high-reliability laboratory team. This is a full-time position working primarily day shift, including up to two weekends per month, with flexibility for holidays and on-call as needed.
This role combines strong generalist bench work with advanced technical oversight and leadership responsibilities in the Blood Bank.
Pay Range: $31 – $45/hr
Position Summary
The MLS II functions as a laboratory generalist while providing section-level leadership in Blood Bank. This includes advanced technical duties, quality oversight, regulatory compliance, staff training, and process improvement initiatives. The role supports high-complexity testing and ensures accurate, timely, and safe laboratory services aligned with accreditation standards.
Key Responsibilities
• Perform testing across all laboratory sections, including advanced and specialized procedures
• Serve as Blood Bank technical specialist and section resource
• Oversee quality control, quality assurance, and proficiency testing
• Troubleshoot complex instrument and assay issues
• Lead method validations, test development, and crossover studies
• Maintain and update policies, procedures, and training documentation
• Support regulatory readiness (CAP, Joint Commission, CLSI, etc.)
Schedule & Work Environment
• Full-time, 80 hours biweekly
• Primarily day shift
• Up to two weekends per month
• Rotating holidays and on-call coverage as needed
• Fast-paced environment with potential for urgent and high-priority testing
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or related biological/chemical science
• Completion of an accredited clinical laboratory practicum or internship meeting CLIA requirements for high-complexity testing
• Minimum 2 years of experience as an MLS in a clinical laboratory
OR
4 years as an MLT with at least 2 years of high-complexity testing including Blood Bank
• Strong technical skills and ability to work independently
• Proven ability to function in a team-oriented environment
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Certifications
• National MLS or MLT certification required
• ASCP certification strongly preferred
