Job Description

Medical Assistant

Location: Naval Medical Center, Portsmouth, VA

Work Schedule: Services shall be provided Monday through Friday, excluding the day of observance of federal holidays, between the hours of 0700 and 1900 hours. Shifts will normally be scheduled for an eight and half (8.5) to nine (9) hour period, to include an uncompensated thirty (30) minute to sixty (60) minute lunch break, respectively. In no instance will the HCW be required to provide services in excess of eighty (80) hours per two-week period.

Qualifications:

5.2.1.5.1. Possess a high school diploma or GED certificate.

5.2.1.5.2. Be a graduate from a medical assistant training program accredited by Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), OR the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) of the American Medical Technologists, OR a formal medical services training program of the United States Armed Forces, OR other formal program.

5.2.1.5.3. Possess a minimum of one (1) year of experience as a MA within the last three (3) years.

5.2.1.5.4. Provide two (2) letters of recommendation written within the last two (2) years attesting to the HCW’s clinical skills. At least one (1) letter must be from a physician or supervisor who has personally observed and evaluated the HCW and who can attest to the HCW’s clinical skills in the care of patients. The other letter may be from a clinic or hospital administrator, physician or nurse who has personal knowledge of the HCW’s patient care skills in a similar clinical environment. Reference letters shall attest to the HCW’s communication skills and ability to relate to patients as well as professional and other interpersonal skills among staff members and must include name, title, phone number, date of reference, address and signature of the individual providing reference.

5.5.3.2.5. Medical Assistant – The HCW shall provide services within the scope of their competencies, the applicable duties provided in the basic contract, and the following:

5.5.3.2.5.1. Prepare exam rooms prior to patient's arrival.

5.5.3.2.5.2. Obtain patient's medical record following appropriate procedures.

5.5.3.2.5.3. Check patient's vital signs, to include temperature, respiration, pulse, weight and blood pressure.

5.5.3.2.5.4. Obtain and document patient's current medical history, drug history, chief complaints, allergies and vital signs on the correct Standard Form before patient is in the exam room.

5.5.3.2.5.5. Assist the provider as needed during exams.

5.5.3.2.5.6. Perform diagnostic procedures when ordered, to include EKGs, urine dip sticks, phlebotomy, etc.

5.5.3.2.5.7. Transport patients to other clinical areas as needed.

5.5.3.2.5.8. Check each chart for the provider's signature, stamp, and each patient's diagnosis prior to returning the chart to Health Records.

5.5.3.2.5.9. After a physician has verified the medicine and dosage, the HCW shall administer medication to patients.

5.5.3.2.5.10. Obtain lab and x-ray results.

5.5.3.2.5.11. Maintain exam room stock levels and perform routine maintenance of exam rooms, to include dusting, cleaning wash basins, etc.

5.5.3.2.5.12. Complete lab and x-ray requisitions in accordance with clinic policies.

5.5.3.2.5.13. Enter demographic data into the computer upon patient check-in; enter diagnosis and departing time when patient is released.

5.5.3.2.5.14. Answer telephone and transcribe accurate messages.

5.5.3.2.5.15. Ensure that any broken or unsafe equipment is removed from the clinic in a timely manner and notify appropriate personnel.

5.5.3.2.5.16. Assist with patient flow and give direct patient care as directed.

5.5.3.2.5.17. Operate the following medical equipment, as directed, such as Automatic Blood Pressure Monitor, Hand Held Nebulizer, EKG Machine (twelve (12) lead), Electronic Thermometer, IV infusion pump (Set-up only), Tynpanometer.

5.5.3.2.5.18. Contact patients regarding appointments, exam/test results or as directed by provider.

5.5.3.2.5.19. Proactively collaborate and integrate with members of the team, other departments and directorates to achieve optimal care for the patients in the Comprehensive Pain Team Model.

5.5.3.2.5.20. Actively participate in Team huddles.

5.5.3.2.5.21. Promote effective communication with staff, patients, and families and between other departments.

5.5.3.2.5.22. Proactively prepare for visits by reviewing upcoming provider schedules to avoid unnecessary visits with their provider and ensuring TEAM workflow.

5.5.3.2.5.23. Screen patients based on standard questionnaires per clinic protocol.

5.5.3.2.5.24. Prepare patient electronic health record and other appropriate forms prior to patient's appointment (i.e., physical). Prepare paperwork during EHR failure.

5.5.3.2.5.25. Utilize automated programs and information technology tools to facilitate the patient experience.

5.5.3.2.5.26. Perform data entry for population health metrics and health promotion. It is expected he/she will participate in updating patient data by utilizing communication and management tools (i.e., AHLTA, CHCS, Care Point, ICDB and Secure Messaging).

5.5.3.2.5.27. Assist in the orientation of new personnel as assigned.

5.5.3.2.5.28. Collaborate with staff and support activities to maintain a safe and orderly department environment.

5.5.3.2.5.29. Perform administrative functions, to include scheduling appointments and preparing correspondence to patients, as assigned.
