Job Description

  • Summary: The Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer will perform in-depth fetal, pediatric, and adult-congenital cardiac ultrasounds for the diagnosis and continuing evaluation of congenital heart disease using transthoracic echocardiography studies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this position)

  • Transport equipment to all specialty wards to perform ultrasounds to include the intensive care unit, neonatal intensive care unit, newborn nursery, pediatric ward and cardiac cauterization laboratory.
  • Provide ultrasound education to residents and other medical staff rotating through the Cardiology service.
  • Maintain proper cleaning and performance of ultrasound equipment.
  • Create charts for new patients and pull existing charts for follow up patients prior to being seen by the Cardiologist, as required.
  • Provide outpatient clinical service (approximately 70%) including, but not limited to: obtain cardiac measurements, perform cardiac ultrasound in the adequate format to represent cardiac disease processes to be reviewed by the cardiologist, enter information into database to generate a report, distribute copies of the report to proper destination (one on the original medical record and one in the cardiology chart), explain ultrasound procedure to patient and parents during the procedure and answer any questions that may occur, maintain cardiac files, generate new charts for new patients and pull old charts for previous patients, and teach residents and other medical staff ultrasound procedures and cardiac anomalies.
  • Provide In-Patient Clinical Service (approximately 30%) duties are the same as above with the exception of transporting the ultrasound machine to the intensive care unit, neonatal intensive care unit, newborn nursery, pediatric ward and cardiac catheterization laboratory to perform ultrasound procedures.

Minimum Qualifications: (To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.)

  • Have a diploma, Associates or Bachelor’s degree in nursing from an accredited college or University.
  • Have successfully completed a subspecialty in Pediatric Echocardiography program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).
  • Possess a license, certification or registry from the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS), Pediatric Echocardiography (PE) or National Society of Cardiopulmonary Technicians (NSCT) certification.
  • Have a minimum of 3 years’ experience within the last 5 years as an echocardiographer in a child and adolescent health care setting.
  • Have successfully completed continuing medical education within the last 24 months.
  • Provide two letters of recommendation written within the last two years attesting to clinical skills. At least one letter must be from a physician or nurse who has personally observed and evaluated the Health Care Worker (HCW) and who can attest to the HCW’s clinical skills in the care of patients. The other letter may be from a clinic or hospital administrator, physician or nurse who has personal knowledge of the HCW’s patient care skills in a similar clinical environment. Reference letters shall attest to the HCW’s communication skills and ability to relate to patients as well as professional and other interpersonal skills among staff members and must include name, title, phone number, date of reference, address and signature of the individual providing reference.
  • Possess and maintain a current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Be able clearly and effectively communicate with all patients and other healthcare providers.
  • Possess knowledge of the pharmacology of most commonly used emergency drugs, anticipated results, usual dosages, and their location in the crash cart.
