Substance Abuse Counselor Job Overview:

  • Perform a full range of Certified Addiction Counselor duties, in accordance with assignment and consistent with the scope of practice for profession, including but not limited to, medical care treatment and patient education in a knowledgeable, skillful, consistent, and continuous manner.
  • Obtain or provide relevant information that will facilitate treatment and assist in developing programs.
  • Provide assessment of substance abuse and addiction.
  • Identify and document medical consequences of alcohol and other substance use, including withdrawal and detoxification.
  • Facilitate the placement and management of patients in appropriate levels of care within the continuum of care model of the treatment of addictive disorders

Substance Abuse Counselor Job Qualifications:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Associate of Arts degree in a behavioral science with specialized training in substance abuse and chemical dependency treatment.

OR

  • Completion of the Navy Drug and Alcohol Counselor School (NDACS) that leads to Navy Certification as Navy Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor.

  • National Certification Credential by one of the following:
    • The National Association of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselors; OR
    • The National Board of Certification Counselors; OR
    • The International Certification & Reciprocity Consortium/Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse.

OR

  • Certification as a Navy Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor

  • License or certification as an Alcoholism and/or Drug Abuse Counselor in any US jurisdictions.
  • Minimum of one (1) year full-time (40 hours per week) experience within the preceding three (3) years as a Substance Abuse Counselor in a Substance Abuse Rehabilitation Program which includes male and female clients.
