Our Mental Health Counselor independently assesses the person served from a clinical and psychosocial perspective; provides group and family therapeutic interventions; makes professional judgments of clinical and psychosocial needs; functions independently to coordinate all aspects of discharges; keeps current with developments in clinical approaches, negotiates effective communication between the treatment team and families, guardians and community providers.

Education:

  • A Master’s Degree in Mental Health Counseling is required.

Experience:

  • Must have knowledge of the DSM-IV - Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders and community resources.

  • Two (2) years of experience with the severe and persistent mentally ill.

  • Ability to implement intervention strategies based upon analysis of information from verbal, non-verbal, collateral and narrative resources.

  • Experience in ethical decision making and utilizing ‘strengths based” clinical practices with individuals and groups.

  • Ability to engage, maintain and appropriately terminate helping relationships with diverse client groups.

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Licensed Mental Health Counselor is preferred.

  1. Provides individualized care and treatment that is consistent with age and life span developmental needs of each person served.
  2. Develops biopsychosocial summaries, develops and implements interventions for barriers to discharge, coordinates all discharge planning and documentation.
  3. Advocates and negotiates with internal and external statewide systems on behalf of person served consistent with professional conduct and standards.
  4. Independently provides all care activities and appropriately seeks direction for unusual situations.
  5. Independently provides crisis intervention and assists families in understanding the complexities of mental illness.
