Job Description

Under general supervision, prepares and positions patients for a variety of medical imaging procedures ranging from routine diagnostic x-rays to highly-specialized diagnostic tests and the operational network management of the acquisition and electronic archiving of all modality image studies to produce diagnostic images for interpretation by a Radiologist.

PAYROLL TITLE: Radiologic Specialist II

EDUCATIONAL INCENTIVE: Some positions may be eligible for educational incentive. This incentive may be 2.5%, 3.5%, or 5% for incumbents in eligible positions based on completion of an Associate's, Bachelor's, or Master's degree not required by the classification.

BILINGUAL INCENTIVE: Some positions may be eligible for bilingual incentive depending on the applicable memorandum of agreement and the needs of the department. In order to qualify for this incentive, incumbents in eligible positions must take and pass the applicable bilingual fluency examination with a score of seventy percent (70%) or higher.

AGENCY/DEPARTMENT: Health Care Agency – Ventura County Medical Center

Radiologic Specialist II is represented by the Service Employees' International Union (SEIU) and is eligible for overtime compensation.
The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill current and future Regular (including Temporary and Fixed-Term), Intermittent, and Extra-Help vacancies. There is currently one (1) Intermittent vacancies.

Examples Of Duties

Duties may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Maintains patient confidentiality per HIPAA regulations;
  • Prepares and positions patients for imaging & shields patients according to radiation safety procedures;
  • Evaluates projected cross-sectional images for clarity, content and scope of examination;
  • Assists physicians during procedures (i.e., biopsies, drainages, needle localizations, etc.);
  • Performs cardiac and great vessel exams and upper and lower vascular exams on adult patients;
  • Recognizes and provides measurements of normal and abnormal pathology;
  • Provides detailed anatomical statistics for interpretation by department physicians;
  • Completes documentation required for examination and billing processes;
  • Cleans and maintains modality specific equipment, including routine preventative maintenance, minor repairs and adjustments;
  • Prepares and administers contrast agents;
  • Assesses and responds rapidly to emergency situations;
  • Performs daily/weekly MQSA image processing and quality assurance tests;
  • Schedules patients and coordinates examinations;
  • Assists in maintaining inventory and orders pharmaceuticals and supplies; and
  • Performs other related duties as required.


Typical Qualifications

These are entrance requirements to the examination process and assure neither continuance in the process nor placement on an eligible list.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE

  • Graduation from a single two-year allied health education program that is patient-care related OR
  • Graduation from a program accredited by The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Professionals (CAAHEP) that specifically conducts programmatic accreditation for diagnostic medical sonography/diagnostic cardiac sonography/vascular technology OR
  • Bachelor's degree in sonography or vascular technology OR
  • Bachelor's degree in any major and the equivalent of one (1) year of full-time clinical ultrasound/vascular experience (NOTE: this experience cannot be used to satisfy the experience required below)
AND
  • At least one (1) year of echocardiology hospital experience performing Transesophageal Echocardiography (TEE) examinations.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Must possess a valid CPR certification.
  • Must be willing to work various shifts.
  • Must be willing to work standby and callback shift assignments.
Desired
  • Certification issued by American Registry of Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographers (ARDCS) Certification or American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS).
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
This position may be subject to State Health Officer Orders regarding vaccine verification and/or testing. These requirements are a condition of employment. Depending on assignment and work location(s), successful candidates or this position will be required to submit proof of vaccination and/or booster against COVID-19 or request an exemption for qualifying medical or religious reasons during the onboarding process.


Supplemental Information
Duties are performed in an acute care setting and include frequent lifting of and/or transportation of patients by wheelchair or gurney/stretcher; moving imaging equipment to patient's bedside for portable studies and standing for extended periods of time; possible continued exposure to x-radiation scatter; and exposure to various types of infectious diseases, blood, body tissues, or excretions.

Shift assignments may include VCMC and/or Santa Paula Hospital and day, evening, night, weekend, and holiday hours.

Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities:
Thorough knowledge on anatomy, physiology, physics, and medical terminology as it relates to the imaging modality; knowledge of exam specific requirements when imaging adult patients; knowledge of HIPAA regulations; knowledge of documentation required for exam billing processes; knowledge of diagnostic medical sonography/diagnostic cardiac sonography/vascular technology; knowledge of X-Ray/Fluoroscopy, computed tomography, electronic medical records, interventional radiology, mammography, magnetic resonance imaging, and PACS Administration; knowledge of echocardiography or ultrasound.

Skills in positioning patients for image acquisition; skills in recognizing and evaluating projected images for clarity, content and scope of examination.

Demonstrated ability to perform routing and complex and/or specialty imaging services studies to include measurements of normal and abnormal pathology and detailed anatomical statistics; demonstrated ability to exercise a high degree of tact, courtesy, poise, sensitivity and respect when explaining procedures to patients; demonstrated ability to provide clear and concise explanations to patients to reduce anxieties and obtain cooperation; demonstrated ability to establish effective working relationships with patients, physicians, and staff.

Candidates must earn a score of seventy percent (70%) or higher to qualify for placement on the eligible list.

Applicants successfully completing the exam process may be placed on an eligible list for a period of one (1) year.
