Job Description
QuarterLine provides professional health care staffing services to military hospitals and health clinics across the United States. We are currently seeking a full-time Ophthalmology Technician at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska.
The duties include but are not limited to the following:
Prepares patients and performs as special surgical assistant in all types of ophthalmic surgery.
Administers ophthalmic drops and ointments, applies ocular dressings, performs suture removal, and obtains eye cultures.
Performs general ophthalmic procedures in preparing preoperative and postoperative patients. T
Takes ophthalmic photographs.
Prepares injectable ophthalmic anesthetics and antibiotics.
Assist surgeons in performing surgical and laser procedures in the clinic and operating room as required. Assist provider in the examination and treatment of ophthalmology patients. This assistance includes, but is not limited to, the following:
Examine records and forms, and prepare patients for current exam and treatment.
Prepare appropriate equipment and instruments for surgery and follow-up care.
Assist ophthalmologist by performing technical tests and records results for procedures for the ophthalmologist\'s analysis and interpretation.
Assist in refractive/diagnostic procedures to include manual manifest refractions, auto-refractometry, corneal topography, pachymetry, keratometry, ocular photography, and visual fields and pupillary reflex testing and other duties as assigned.
Prepare anesthetics and antibiotics.
Apply ocular dressings.
Conducts vision screening tests to include, but not limited to, the following:
Visual acuity, color vision, tonometry, visual fields, pupil exams, and other technical tests required by the ophthalmologist.
Record data of above tests and determines need for further evaluation.
Prepare, clean, sterilize, and maintain proper stock of all surgical equipment, instrumentation, and medications.
Prepare procedure room.
Assist the ophthalmologist with clinical procedures and performs as special assistant, using procedures pertaining to all types ophthalmologic surgeries.
Prepare patients for and performs general preparation of pre-operative patients. Provide post-operative instructions as directed by the physician. Assist provider in contact lens cleaning, dispensing, insertion/removal, and patient instruction. Prepare and fit patients with special optometric devices as instructed by the provider. Instruct patients in correct care, hygiene post-procedurally.
Order and maintain ophthalmologic medications, supplies and equipment for use by the physician. Perform routine checks of medications and sterile instrument packs for expiration dates.
Maintain and perform required periodic calibration checks on surgical instruments and equipment.
The ophthalmology technician will provide services as part of the USAF Refractive Surgery Program in accordance with standard clinical practice and Air Force Instruction 48-123, USAF Refractive Surgery Program.
The ophthalmology technician will be certified on refractive surgery laser platforms.
May be required to assist with administrative and clerical duties in support of the ophthalmology and refractive surgery clinic. Such duties include, but are not limited to:
Greet patients/visitors at a front desk and answer main office phone lines. Assist with patient questions or direct to appropriate section for assistance.
Arrange and schedule medical appointments, determine patient eligibility for services.
Assist with surgical scheduling for the ophthalmology/refractive surgery center: Contact patients to schedule, reschedule, and/or cancel appointments for weekly surgeries.
Provide pre-operative instructions to patients and assist with administrative duties related to preparation for surgery day and post-operative care.
Prepare surgical charts for patients. Organize and contact patients for needed information, and review records for completeness, accuracy, and consistency within established guidelines.
Maintain timely, accurate and up-to-date patient schedules and databases.
Locate, update, scan, and file medical records as needed.
Assist with completion of electronic medical record encounters according to specific and defined instructions provided.
The technichian may be directed to visit other Laser Vision Correction centers or attend conferences for training purposes.
The Opthalmology Technician will generally work between the hours of 7:30 am and 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday.
Education. Completion of an ophthalmology technician course, optometric technician course with at least one year of experience in ophthalmology, or at least two years experience in ophthalmology to include assisting in surgery.
Certification:
Must have Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO) certification as Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or higher.
Must possess knowledge in the following:
Must have knowledge of ocular anatomy; ophthalmic medications; visual physiology, optics; use and maintenance of ophthalmic instruments and testing equipment; ophthalmic and medical regulations; medical terminology; optometric technology; asepsis; ocular referrals and emergency medical treatment; patient transportation; medical ethics; medical administration; surgical instruments and equipment; ophthalmic injectable medications; anesthetic solutions; and, ocular disorders.
