SPECIFIC TASKS:
Manage all aspects of the Armed Services Whole Blood Processing Lab – East (ASWBPL-East) frozen blood program, to include manufacture of viable frozen blood for human infusion, development of operating procedures, equipment maintenance and quality assurance activities.
Glycerolize blood units in accordance with established operating procedures, to include glycerolization, labeling, storage and all applicable paperwork.
Deglycerolize blood units in accordance with established operating procedures, to include thawing, deglycerolization, sterility checks and all appropriate quality control and required documentation.
Manufacture a blood product labeled, licensed, and appropriate for human use. Perform applicable quality control procedures to ensure blood units are properly glycerolized and deglycerolized to meet Food and Drug Administration (FDA) guidelines, to include labeling, supernatant hemoglobin, residual glycerol and sterility checks.
Maintain proficiency on the Haemonetics ACP 215 for cell processing, to include current procedures and any future changes/updates.
Provide services in compliance with all procedures in accordance with applicable military installation written policies, procedures, regulations and guidelines.
Follow established procedures to perform routine and special tests in the communicated section, to include ABO & RH typing, shipping and receiving of blood products. and inputting data into (DBSS) Defense Blood Standard System or other required computer data bases such as CHCS (Composite Healthcare Computer System)
Ensure blood products are properly input into the Defense Blood Standard System (DBSS), to include frozen red cells (RCZ), cryoprecipitate (CRYO), red blood cells (RBC) and fresh frozen plasma (FFP).
Extract required data from DBSS to generate daily, weekly, monthly, and annual data reports. Interpret generated reports and initiate applicable actions. Maintain proficiency on all aspects of DBSS and applicable regulations governing operation of DBSS.
Manage blood products inventory to meet mission requirements to include, assessing requirements, establishing inventory levels, and servicing customers at 19 stateside donor centers and 4 over seas blood transshipment centers.
Provide all quality control on all equipment and reagents in accordance with established standard operating procedures, ASWBPL, CAP (College of American Pathologists) and FDA (Food and Drug Administration) guidelines.
Provide instrument maintenance/troubleshooting as specified in work center procedure manuals. Documents instrument checks, problems and solutions.
Maintain a neat and efficient work space by cleaning equipment and instruments and replenishing supplies. (Rotates stock using oldest reagents first.)
Assists in clerical and administrative tasks as required, to include: maintenance of quality control record, generating new QC sheets when needed, and inventory and requisition of supplies and materials as needed.
Properly ship blood products to military service facilities in accordance with established standard operating procedures.
Provide services in compliance with applicable military installation and Service written policies, procedures and regulations, as well as those of American Association of Blood Banks (AABB), College of American Pathologists (CAP), Clinical Laboratory Improvement Program (CLIP) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Complete facility specific training and competency training as communicated prior to performing any procedures.
Provide blood laboratory services to include proficiency testing on blood samples in and from National Regulatory Agencies with a minimum overall score of 80% (100% for blood banking samples).
Provide Administrative Support to include maintaining quality control of patient records generating new Quality Control (QC) sheets when needed, and inventory and requisition of supplies and materials as needed.
Provide Quality control and troubleshooting on equipment and reagents in accordance with established standard operating procedures, ASWBPL, CAP and FDA guidelines.
Maintain neat and efficient work space by cleaning equipment and instruments and replenishing supplies.
