(Experience must be in a clinical histology lab, not a research lab). Formal Histology education (A.A. degree) is preferred. HT ASCP Certification is preferred. MT/MLS/CLS Certification by ASCP-BOC, ASCP-BOR, or AMT is preferred. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) experience is preferred. The HT is expected to be very proficient in cutting tissue and must be able to cut 30 blocks per hour. Professional knowledge and skill in medical technology, anatomy and physiology, histology and mathematic principles, concepts, and methodology sufficient to perform a broad range of specialized tests and non-routine procedures, quality controls, research and implement new procedures, and troubleshoot procedures and equipment. Knowledge of anatomy and histology in order to recognize tissue and cytology specimens; recognize the origin for proper positioning of delicate and small samples; microscopically differentiate both the quality of the stain and specific cellular components of the tissue; resolve technical problems arising from routine and special staining procedures. Knowledge of chemistry and various chemical reaction mechanisms used to demonstrate different components of human tissue (e.g. special staining and avoiding adverse chemical reactions by combining incompatible chemicals). Knowledge to evaluate the quality of a specimen and select the appropriate procedure(s) which yield the best material (slides/cells) for diagnostic interpretation. Knowledge which enables the incumbent to select the appropriate procedure to evaluate the quality of a fluid for cytology and decide which method will provide the most diagnostic slides for interpretation by the pathologist. It may be required to modify existing procedures to resolve problems or set up new stains and procedures as applicable. Knowledge of medical-legal and accrediting/regulatory agency requirements sufficient to insure work is consistent with standards and guidelines. Knowledge of computer systems and programs sufficient to perform a variety of tasks. Knowledge of administrative and clerical duties necessary to complete work assignments.
