Job Description: Maxim Government Services (MGS), a division of Maxim Staffing Solutions, is currently seeking a Radiology Technologist (Rad Tech) or Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS) with Cath and EP experience to provide services at the VA San Diego Healthcare System. The candidate shall perform Cardiac Catheterization procedures and Electrophysiology procedures for the Cardiology Section of the Medicine Service at the VA San Diego Healthcare System, 3350 La Jolla Village Drive, San Diego, CA 92161.

2. 2 years of Cath Lab experience

1. Full time; Monday through Friday 7:30am – 5:00pm
2. One week of call per month; 2 hour minimum call back


The Cardiac Catheterization/Electrophysiology Lab Technologist functions as the first assistant to the Cardiologist during a cardiovascular procedure. The Cardiac Catheterization/Electrophysiology Lab Technologist is expected to perform a wide range of diagnostic tests and support duties such as the collection of blood samples for analysis for research, coagulation studies and blood gas determination.

Diagnostic and interventional catheterization procedures include: Coronary angiograms, coronary angioplasty, coronary arteriography, left and right ventricular angiography, ventricular biopsy, thrombolytic procedures, electrophysiologic catheter ablation, aortic balloon pump counter-pulsation, post coronary bypass graft studies and Pacemaker/AICD implantation.


The Cardiac Cath/EP Lab Technologist must be able to provide the following services:
a. Operates radiologic fluoroscopy equipment to allow the medical team to appropriately visualize images during the procedure.
b. Assists or performs testing such as electrocardiograms (ECG), IVUS echocardiograms,
c. Intracoronary Pressure Wire, Drug exercise challenges, and the administration of Dynamic Electrocardiograph (Holter) analysis.
d. Monitors cardiac rhythms and is able to recognize abnormal and life threatening rhythms.
e. Performs other monitoring procedures such as oximetry, blood pressure, arterial monitoring, intracardiac monitoring and is able to recognize abnormal readings.
f. Performs patient care procedures such as applying dressings, and collection of specimens or blood samples for analysis.
g. Technologist is scrubbed and gowned and responsible for preparing the catheters, guide wires, transducers, angioplasty balloons, stents, and manifold assembly.
h. Operates the angiographic pressure injector to control the rate of pressure development and limits the onset of ejection in order to minimize ventricular irritability during the procedure.
i. Functions in the non-sterile, role (circulator) by preparing the vascular access site on the patient, positioning the patient, operating the electric exam table and radiologic equipment, opening sterile supplies and monitoring patient physiologic response to the procedure.
j. During cardiac arrest, operates the defibrillator and initiates CPR in order to restore the patient toa normal cardiac rhythm.
k. Sets up Procedure Suite ensuring sterile supplies and other required equipment are carefully selected and properly presented as determined by the procedure being performed.
l. Sets up Mac 7000 and the GE x-ray computers, performs quality checks to ensure readiness for use during the procedure. Sets up the GE x-ray diagnostic system (fluoro) so that appropriate views of cardiac anatomy can be obtained and recorded for analysis. Performs check of lead shielding equipment in compliance with National Standards (JCAHO, OSHA).
m. Prepares the various computer software and peripheral devices (disk and magnetic tape drives and video formatters) to quantitate coronary lesions and to generate ventricular analysis reports, cardiac output (thermodilution, Fick determinations). Maintains logs of patient data and library of videotapes and hardcopy tracings.
n. Performs daily calibration of equipment. Prepares physiologic monitoring equipment such as ECG, Oximetry, IABP, balloon catheters, code cart, Intravascular ultrasound, Fick cardiac output device, Therapeutic Pressure wire, defibrillator and various other complex equipment.
o. Performs quality checks for various lab analysis equipment such as blood gas, coagulation studies that are used throughout the procedure. Ensures that emergency medication is available in the suite, performing quality checks to verify outdates and competency of like containers to ensure sterility and correct medication dosage. Performs quality assessment of the 35mm cine film processor, on a daily basis, validating sensitometer exposures and ensuring correct parameters are used.
p. Recognizes and provides for the psychosocial needs of patients and their families. Explains procedures to patient to reduce anxieties and gain cooperation
q. Provides reports, keeps records. Reviews test results with the interpreting physician.
r. Uses Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS) for scheduling info., patient exam notes and results, etc. Personal Computer Network for access/input to Department files and information; computerized e-mail systems and internal Internet page. Is able to use other simple computer based data entry forms for recording preliminary data from each recorded examination.
s. Performs elementary preventive maintenance of the equipment and coordinates emergency and preventive service with Biomedical Engineering and outside service companies.


The Cardiovascular Technologist must have physical ability to handle regular and recurring physical exertion such as: long periods of standing, bending, reaching for supplies or materials, moving patients, lifting moderately heavy items, and occasionally heavier items. The Cardiovascular Technologist may also be required to work under these conditions well beyond four (4) continuous hours on any given day due to unusually difficult cases. Cardiovascular Technologist shall be free of any health or physical disabilities that may interfere with the performance of their duties.
