Hood, TX Reports To: Program Manager FLSA Status: Exempt, Full Time, Regular Prepared Date: 09-24-2014 Approved Date: 09-24-2014 Summary: The Genetics Counselor shall provide genetic counseling out-patient services for Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center at Fort Hood, TX. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this position) Provide genetic counseling services to beneficiaries who have, or are at an increased risk for familial cancers and genetic diseases Collect individual and family medical history formation Assessments of hereditary risks for birth defects and cystic fibrosis Educate patients and review of options through group and/or individual counseling Coordinate genetic testing with patient, clinic and laboratories ensuring adequate sample handling of all biologic materials and specimen confidentiality Provide test results to patients and physicians Provide for ongoing supportive counseling Dictation of clinical summary letters Educate patients, medical students, residents, physicians, and other medical professionals about genetic testing services and genetic counseling services. This may include group and classroom sessions. Non-Essential Duties: Other duties as assigned Supervisory Responsibilities: NONE Minimum Qualifications: (T o perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily .) Shall possess a masters degree in genetic counseling from an accredited Genetics Counseling program Shall have two plus years experience as a practicing Genetics Counselor in the last three years. Preferred experience with OB patients Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Be able to read, write, and speak English fluently to be able to communicate effectively with patients and other healthcare providers.
